Background of the Study
Road traffic accidents (RTAs) are a major global public health concern, contributing to significant morbidity and mortality rates, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (World Health Organization [WHO], 2024). According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Nigeria records thousands of road traffic accidents annually, resulting in fatalities, disabilities, and a substantial burden on the healthcare system (Nigeria Centre for Disease Control [NCDC], 2024). Factors such as poor road infrastructure, reckless driving, inadequate enforcement of traffic regulations, and lack of emergency response services contribute to the high incidence of RTAs (Aliyu & Garba, 2024).
Kwara State has witnessed an increasing trend in road traffic accidents, with reports indicating frequent occurrences along major highways and urban roads (Usman et al., 2024). The public health impact of RTAs extends beyond direct fatalities to include long-term disabilities, psychological trauma, and economic losses for affected individuals and their families. Despite existing road safety policies, the burden of RTAs remains high, necessitating a comprehensive study to assess their impact on public health and recommend preventive measures.
Statement of the Problem
Road traffic accidents contribute significantly to injury-related morbidity and mortality in Kwara State, yet limited research has been conducted to assess their broader public health impact (NCDC, 2024). Many victims suffer from long-term disabilities, placing a strain on healthcare resources and increasing financial burdens on families (Ogunleye et al., 2024). Additionally, emergency response systems are often inadequate, leading to delays in receiving life-saving care.
There is a need to evaluate the extent of road traffic injuries, their impact on public health, and the effectiveness of existing road safety measures in Kwara State. This study will provide evidence-based recommendations to improve road safety policies and healthcare response strategies.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the prevalence and causes of road traffic accidents in Kwara State.
2. To examine the public health impact of RTAs, including injury patterns and healthcare burden.
3. To evaluate the effectiveness of road safety measures and emergency response services.
Research Questions
1. What are the major causes and trends of road traffic accidents in Kwara State?
2. How do RTAs impact public health in terms of injury burden and healthcare resource utilization?
3. What road safety and emergency response measures can reduce the impact of RTAs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Road traffic accidents significantly contribute to injury-related morbidity and mortality in Kwara State.
2. Inadequate emergency response systems exacerbate the public health impact of RTAs.
3. Strengthening traffic regulations and road safety measures will reduce the incidence of RTAs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on the prevalence, causes, and health consequences of road traffic accidents in Kwara State. Limitations may include challenges in accessing accident records and self-reported data accuracy from accident victims.
Definitions of Terms
• Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) – Collisions involving motor vehicles, pedestrians, or other road users, leading to injuries or fatalities.
• Public Health Impact – The effect of health-related events on the overall well-being of a population.
• Emergency Response Services – Medical and logistical interventions provided to accident victims to minimize fatalities and complications.
